Hi,

I got Harvey S4 twintec water softener installed by builder and it appears to be working ok (as consuming salt) but water sometimes feel hard for a week and next week it feels soft silky.
I asked builder to have a look and he simply changed the white dial settings as shown in the picture but I don't feel any difference.
Having looked at YouTube, it seems to increase or decrease the water softening capability, that dial is not the right settings and it is actually used for manual regeneration
This dial can turn both clockwise and anticlockwise. As per the manual, I should close the outlet valves and turn this 360 degree to regenerate water.
Now I am not sure what should be the correct settings of these dials.
Can anyone please suggest

Have you tested the water when it feels hard to see if it really is hard? Or just the difference between just-regenerated and due-for-regeneration?
On our softener, the water is noticeably "silkier" immediately after a regen, but if we run a test the water still shows as soft.
There are various types easily available, some are tablets, some are strips, some are liquid.

If you test and the water really is hard, then you have something definite to show the installer as proof that it has not been set up properly.

water test shows soft always but I can see shower screen is getting white limescale marks on it which never happened before in other house where I was using same harveys for 8 years and never had to scrub at least the limescale marks out.
I have a feeling that plumber (not so qualified with softener internal workings) has fiddled with that knob on the top which, to my understanding, has altered the regenration process in left or right cylinder or something like this.
I am not sure what should be the default settings of those knobs so I can put it at the right place and leave it there.

You could try looking for a local water softener company that carries out servicing - there are quite a few independents around who work on most makes/models, not usually very expensive, and will know more about the settings than a builder.
My opinion, If you are testing the water when it feels hard but the tests show it is soft, then it is soft.
It also(probably) means that it is not limescale residues but other minerals that water softerners do not remove.
In our home, the taps and kettle still get residues that look exactly like limescale, but are easily removed (i.e, do not go hard like limescale).
This did not happen in our last home, although using the same water softener.
Different areas have different minerals in the water, and not all can be removed by water softeners.
