Has the tables turned?

It may be that one can only be in the position to get the weekend work if you are also doing the weekdays too.
Then, it loses its attraction unless you are solely motivated by the numbers.

Feast or famine.
The job he does at the weekends, has to be done at the weekends (shut-down).

I'm taking about the person, not the task.

I did many a job that had to be done out-of-hours, but I was only up for consideration because I also did the weekday stuff too.

As a sole trader the self employed person has the ability to reduce some of their taxes by offsetting expenses. Once you are big enough to form a LTD company or LLP you can issue shares and pay dividends on the shares. You also have the ability to sell off company assets to yourself at below market value as the tax man allows you to be quite pessimistic.

Someone bringing in £1200 a week, assuming that is net of costs and they take some holiday and employ the mrs part time to do the phones and books, has the ability to reduce their income tax by around 8-12% vs a PAYE person.

It's worth remembering that even a PAYE person has the ability to claim the tax on business expenses the company wont pay.

I wonder how many on here are self employed vs Employed. I know at one time it was better to be self employed money wise. However has the tables turned since covid? I get amazing money and garanteed every month, overtime whenever I like, expensive tools supplied, holiday pay and even sick pay if you go off sick. Not sure if I could earn the sort of money self employed that I get employed.
Sounds like your job is well payed and you’re looked after.

If I was employed by a company as a gas engineer I’d get 40-50k and all the benefits, but I’d have to do a full week and probably weekends on a rota.

If you’re after money, being employed can be the best route now. If you want to call the shots self employed. I’d struggle to go back to an employer now.

Self employment for me was a lifestyle choice do what i want when i want for who i want never worked a full week no need to , couple of days a week were spent on the golf course and time with with family etc .
But you’ve had good runs being employed too ?

Yep one of the good things about employment is the benefits .
I did laugh to myself at one interview as i was getting the job and the guy telling what great money i would be on as a basic for the week and it was very good money and im thinking i earned a lot more than that for 7 hours yesterday .
But i hadnt gone back employed for the money there was other reasons at the time

yes I definately think that the tables have turned and that you CAN be better off employed both financially and security wise without any hassle. I work from a hand held so I rarely go into an office to be micro managed, I work my jobs around myself so providing the jobs get done they leave you alone.

I am offered work all of the time for guvvy rewires, not interested in that kind of work, that is grim in my opinion.
Don't blame you, I've got a house bashing mate I do the odd rewire with him, I soon regret starting it

Thats one of the biggest bug bears out there just now with trackers / laptops /pda`s/ phones showing exactly were you are and what you are doing with someone in an office who doesnt understand how you plan your route and jobs and they then try to get involved with you during the day altering stuff and messing stuff up
