Have I made a big mistake with my undercoat?

We're redecorating our bathroom and have just had the ceiling plastered. Done all the sanding down etc... and started doing the first coat of undercoat in cheap Homebase matt white. I finished the remains of that off and went to buy more but they only had silk left.

I've subsequently bought the silk and proceeded with the first coat of undercoat. I knew that it wasn't ideal but as the matt and silk are different finishes - but it is only the first layer and didn't think differences would matter at this point.

When my partner, (who'd been sitting downstairs on his arse playing on some kind of walking round corridors and shooting people game - version 7) came upstairs and went mad stating that I'd ruined everything and we'd never be able to paint over it.

I wanted to check with people in the know - have I in fact nearly brought the planet to a standstill or is there still hope for the bathroom?

In short is it OK to use wht silk emulsion as undercoat or does it have to be matt?

I would really appreciate any responses.

Cheers

Matt I'm afraid, watered down 20-30% for the first mist coat, then fill & sand any imperfections; but you shouldn’t need to sand new plaster at all if it’s been properly done! Many types of filler applied directly to new plaster will bubble & blister when you apply paint over it.

Weather or not you have "nearly brought the planet to a standstill or is there still hope for the bathroom" will rather depend on weather or not it peels off & falls onto the floor but there is every possibility; suck it & see!

Thank you - I think!

What now concerns me is precisely what it is I'm supposed to be sucking and waiting to see.

It's mainly been the walls that we've sanded down - trying to make sure the whole thing was properly prepared for the paining, which clearly I've done wrong by covering most of the walls & ceiling with silk emulsion instead of matt.

Whatever takes your (or your partners) fancy really

I was speaking figuratively! Try a second full coat over it & see what happens, you’ve nothing much to loose; if it bubles & blisters, it's just as easy (probably easier) to peel off two coats of paint as it is one.
