I'm shortly having a combi boiler fitted (flue going straight up through roof). It will be located in the old cylinder cupboard of my bungalow simply because there is no other place to locate it (this being in the middle of the house). I qualify for free cavity wall and loft insualtion. When the loft insulation surveyor came yesterday to assess the house for cavity wall insualtion he told me the following:

The cupboard that the boiler is in will need vents as its not on a outside wall.

The boiler will need a vortex flue because as the cavity is being filled there is no where for the gas to escape to (if any problems with the boiler).

my plumber says the surveyor is talking rubbish as the new flue will be fan assisted. Has any one else heard of this or experianced this kind of problem? Know what the relevant regulations are?

Cheers for looking!

He's right, the plumber that is. The surveyor dosn't know what he's talking about.

Surveyors.
Ask him is he is gas safe registered (the replacement of corgi), if he is not, ignore whatever he says about boilers.
Vortex flue? What is that? A flue with a maelstrom in it?
The man does not have a clue, but tries to sound interesting

He's obviously read something somewhere about vertex flues, and ventilation, and other stuff, and got it all jumbled up a bit.

Easy to install but sod putting correct size vents in , thats a job for the apprentice ;)

agree with the other two surveyor should be fired for having a mouth which is 5 years ahead of his mental age.

Thanks for the comments. The plumber I intend to use is gas safe registered, i've known him for years. I thought the surveyor did'nt know what he was talking about. I think he was looking at ways of not having to do the job!

Depending on the size of the cupboard and the make and model of boiler you're having installed you may need vents on the cupboard door but your installer will put them in if needed.
