Hoorah, the NHS have agreed to give me a stapedotomy (feel free to view this on youtube) which means that my hearing should be improved dramatically within the next few months. Obviously there is a small percent failure rate, but this ear has gone beyond hearing aid assistance stage, and I have nothing to lose.

Joking aside why shouldn't you have the procedure done on the NHS you pay your dues,or rather they are collected before you have a chance to see them.

The last time I broached the subject about 18 years ago they were a bit concerned that if it failed and my "good" ear which had been done when I was 17 failed too, then I would be profoundly deaf. So they decided not to go ahead since at the time a hearing aid could be used to boost it up. It is no longer the case, and if the operation gives me any hearing, then this can be boosted. At present, it's entirely useless and just hisses with tinnitus.

I'll try and find a link to a noise which (if you like) you could plug into one ear via a headphone so you can get the picture of what it's like.

My tinnitus in one ear is not dissimilar (slightly higher pitch than) this: Play about 75% volume in one ear. Enjoy

I've had tinnitus for the past 15 years - you get used to ignoring it.

Might be a good time to learn sign langauge as you never know what is round the corner (All due respect canta)

9 million people in the UK either deaf or hard of hearing so we may all face it one day.
