Not sure if this should be under genaral building?Kind of floor related though.

We have taken up our laminate kitchen floor (suspended timber ground level floor typical for late victorian terrace) so we can expose pine floor boards and sand and seal 'em.

We have exposed some kind of hearth and looks like there was a previous fire place at some time in the past that has been totally removed including breast (but breast is still at bedroom above and structuraly sound).

The hearth is meade up of what can best described as a couple of inch deep conrete blocks (nothing like modern ones more like bricks) down on a load of compaced earth/ash/hardcore type fill which assume goes on for another half a foot down to the earth sub floor.

Is it best to dig all this out (taken away the top conc stone blocks) and put a couple of trimmers between the joist to make the floor good with reclaimed boards where the hearth was. Is this difficult?

Or is it best to put some kind of screed down and tile over although may be a bit odd as no fireplace.would I need a dpm down?how to shutter the concrete?

Cheers
