Hearth Materials

I am going to build a hearth for a coal fire, I know the basics and the dimensions and I know what tiles to use I am just wondering what ratio of cement to use?? Do I use 4:1 sand/cement??

The Hearth size is 54" wide, 18" deep to wall then in fireplace its 22" wide by 14" deep. Thickness will be 2"

A structural hearth is usually formed in concrete. A 1:2:4 mix would be ok.

Excuse my ignorance but what parts are what??

1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 4 parts stone.
