I would like to make a fireplace hearth, but would like it no more than 1" thick. Would this be achievable with a sand / cement mix? If so what should the ratio be? Should I add any agregate? I have some steel rod kicking around the shed, can I use this in the mix to strengthen the hearth? The overall dimensions would ideally be 1200 x 500 x 25 mm, and it will be tiled with black quarry tiles.

any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

regards fish.

if you're going to tile on top, then thickening with sand/cement will be ok.

use sharp sand and wet the intended surface thoroughly prior to cement application. mix it 3 sand to 1 cement.
