Should I instal a heat or smoke sensor in the loft. Seems to be some conflicting advice out there. Thanks.

depends what's up there

if there's a central heating boiler then a heat sensor, if it's just the usual collection of random stuff then a smoke sensor (optical).

The smoke sensor will pick up smouldering fires - the type most likely from say an electrical fault

The heat sensor will react to a rapid rise in temperature

If you are using the Loft Space for living accomodation then an Alarm is required,

If its only opened occasionally, thought should be given at to whether it can be heard, from below the loft , so a smoke detector hard wired into the House Smoke alarm system would solve this problem.

Dust and temperature changes in a loft space may make basic smoke alarms/detectors unsuitable in this location, make sure it is suitable for the job its intended for.
