Is there a good online training course for heating systems and heating controls, that you could point me towards.

I don't think it is online, but it is held all over the UK and it is the HONEYWELL heating control course, it covers Y plan, S plan, and all other Honeywell controls includiong smart TRV's - well worth the cash! 
Other that just read the manual.
If you are a sparky, then you can use a multimeter.
For boiler and heating electrics that's all you really need.
Baxi apparently do a good course. But then you have to sit in a room looking at shltty Baxis all day so that might you off

Of course a Sparky may not recognise how bad a Baxi is!!
