It sounds as if you have two faults, possibly one genuine fault and one caused by someone fiddling!
I would be looking at the diverter having failed to move and the demand switch being jammed on.
Do you have any further information to go with that boiler model?

vaillant turbomax plus 828e. its been happening for a while now but seems to correct itself when turned off for a few hours at the mains but now no hot water at all just hot radiators even when in the off position
OK now that I know the model I can identify the fault!
Your diverter valve is sticking in the CH position and you have the DHW preheat switched on.
Temporarily switch off the DHW preheat.
We charge £84 + £94 to replace the valve in our local area.
Its not too difficult a job as a DIY for somebody with some experience.

where is the dhw pre heat located
is it on the end of the diverter valve
Its not a gadget!
Its a sequence of button pushes on the front panel.
Look in user manual or search on this forum as its been quoted several times.
