I'm plumbing a new washing machine and am tapping into the existing sink waste via a new open trap with U-bend. The existing waste which I am using is about 400mm up, so there is only room for a short vertical length of waste pipe below the worktop. Does that matter?

it might do.

sorry cant be more specific.

the problem will be how fast the water can get away, it is common for the vertical pipe to fill slightly as the m/c empties, rinse time is the worst because there is more water.

i would be inclined to take the waste directly to the outside drain to be sure

Thanks for that. Unfortunately a new hole in the wall for the wm waste would be tricky due to inaccessibility.

However I was wondering about connecting to the sink waste which is alongside. Presumably with the right sink trap the wm waste just plugs onto it?
