What can I do? Replace the whole thing? How do you know what to buy? Where do you get them from this time of afternoon?

Every decent industrial estate seems to have a good door locks place, if it were me I'd take it along to your local one.

It's a Milenco Mantis but there are a few variations so choose carefully, the gearbox seperates on these so it'll be cheaper to replace than the job lot
I had the thing apart to see what was wrong (arrow points to the bit that has broken - took me fecking ages to put it back together) and it didn’t look like the lock came away from the rest of it.

I took plenty of measurements so I’m going to draw a diagram with the measurements to send off if I can’t find one locally. I’m just happy to get it back together tonight and be able to lock my front door. At the moment I can lock it from outside only. To open the door I have to unlock it from outside and then go round and open it from inside. If I dare try to lift the handle up inside to lock it, it falls to bits inside and jams. At least we can come and go through the patio doors until this is sorted.

The door is about 20 years old and I think I’m going to have grief getting the lock as a few years ago I replaced the handles and it was a mission and a half finding something that matched the dimensions.

Just found the email from 11 years ago when I was trying to source the replacement handles. I sent them measurements for the handles. Does this identify the lock?

Hi,

Thanks for the email.

We don't have that handle I'm afraid.

It is available though if you search for 'Millenco 117pz' you need the offset version .

Just done a bit of searching and these locking mechanisms aren’t cheap! However, as I now know how to strip and rebuild this lock, I’ve found a place that sells the actual part that has broken inside mine for £25 so I’m going to give them a call tomorrow.

"Millenco Cams designed to replace damaged cams in a Millenco 117/86 multipoint lock. Excellent for repairs, as the cam is the part that is most likely to break in the lock. Much cheaper than buying an entire replacement lock".

Milenco Mantis 1, quick search and found for £32 for the whole gearbox, I've also found just the cam for £11

Ordered one from eBay. £15.20 including postage. Should be here on Thursday instead of opting for free delivery but not getting it until Friday.

Update:
I've only gone and fixed it! Part arrived just over an hour ago and it’s all back working again. I dread to think what a locksmith would have charged to come out and fit a new locking mechanism.

Thanks to all for your help. (y)

A locksmith would have either fitted a new gearbox OR robbed the cam from the redundant lower spindle and swapped them around,

The lower spindle is not redundant on that - the lower spindle is for the outside handle and the upper one is for the inside one.
