Help me identify these bushes please

Hi again.

Seems the spirea has lots of “dead heads”. Would now be good time deal with that? (Another bloom before end of summer?)

Thanks

Yes you can deadhead, (though I never bother) and don't be rushing out for stumpkiller (or weedkiller of any kind) - it's a young lilac - not bamboo or JKW or a triffid!

Unless, obviously, you want to remove it. I've had lilac. Neglected, they throw up a thicket of stems.

And it looked to me like you do want to remove it.

Decided to go for the nuclear option. The problem is the intruder seems to have already formed a wide and hard root. It’s also adjacent to the hypericum roots, so don’t want to damage those.

How would you proceed from here?

Not that it's that relevant, given your preference - historically it's likely that the lilac was planted there, and the hypericum self-seeded...

Hi again

Pretty sure the STJW was there first. Think I would have noticed and commented on the tall stem earlier. (The bushes there when we moved on 25 years ago)

Thanks
