Please help me.I've just moved to a new old house(semi 1930's).The central heating system is old and noisy and the heating bills are going to be astronomical.Besides putting in a whole new system or just moving house again(believe me I,ve considered it) what can I do.

Honestly i'm at the end of my tether

might be an idea to give us all a clue as to what you have at present

Thanks for replying kevplumb. It's an oldish conventional boiuler I think but the big problem is that the heating won't come on without the hot water so the water is being heated all the time.

Put it this way - I'm reading the gas meter every day!!!!

Oh the pipes are knocking undre the floor boards

otherwise known as a gravity system
you can't have heating without hot water this is normal

you should consider a fully pumped "s" or "y" plan

at the very least "c"plan

look here

Should I just have a combi installed?
Why are the pipes knocking - it's like a brass band playing in my living room - honest Kevplumb - my head is shot - there'll be a loop system round my neck!

find the ones that are knocking and pack them (probobly not clipped properly)

BTW a combi is not a universal cure

Do combis work out cheaper though?

1930`s house...........open the fireplaces and get the coal in boyo
