Currently buying a property, built roughly 1955s. Survey came back with structural issues within the loft. Both sides have purlins however Right side of the roof/loft has vertical purlin strut supports the left side doesn't! Structural Engineer has said it was built that way, Survey and builders say different! A wooden vertical piece of timber is visible on left side, it look like its been cut but again Structural Engineer has said that it was never a support. Anyone heard of a roof built like that?

If the structural engineer has given you a report stating that it's as built then you can rely on that, as they will have to have professional insurance to back up what they are saying.
If it's been ok this long then it won't be moving.

There would not or should not have been a timber there to start with. there’s no sign of a purlin that needs supporting.

Can see why you say it looks like a vertical post has been cut. What does the 'cut' vertical sit / bear on to? / how is it supported?

post a picture of the side with the timber strut below the purlin

joist? looks more like a tie beam,
shouldnt have done that to it:eek:.

We had a similar setup where our old water tank used to sit, it took the load down the side of the bedroom door frame.
