For some reason the power keeps tripping. It is the RCCB that goes off.

This happens randomly and has been happening for the last 6-7 months on and off. I though it had corrected itself as, untill yesterday, it had not happened for 3 months and now it has gone twice.

How do I trouble shoot this? I have allready unplugged everything I can.

Is it worth calling a sparky out? Will he be able to diagnose it?

Thanks in advance.

I had a problem like this after I had an extension built & the sparky put in the new sockets. I didnt have the problem for the first few months.
I found it eventually it was a bad live connection in the back of a socket.

So if you could have a look at the wiring on the back of the sockets.
Turn the power off first

There are lots of things it could be. Here are some causes of tripping I've come across.

Do you have a slight leak on your central heating pump, or motorised valve(s) allowing water to enter the electrics?

Fridges and freezers can cause random tripping, as can cooking appliances as the elements start to fail. Are you cooking when it trips?

Have you put anything on your walls, pictures, shelves etc., about the time the tripping started? if so you could have a damaged cable.

Have you had a problem with rodents? they like to eat cables.

Have you loosened a socket front whilst decorating and trapped the cables putting it back.

Have you nailed down a loose floorboard about 7 months ago?

What else happened about 7 months ago?

A sparky will be able to carry out insulation tests of the fixed wiring, but a random appliance fault may be more difficult to trace.
