Hello, I'm new to this forum so apologies if I've put this in the wrong place. I'm also a complete novice when it comes to boilers so excuse any stupid questions.

It's the weekend and my usual 'boiler man' is away for the weekend, but I was hoping there was something I could do myself, here's the problem (excuse the essay):

About a week ago the hot water from the tap started heating only occasionally. It would be either very very hot or freezing cold. I was told by the 'boiler man' to increase the pressure, which I did and this seemed to improve it for a few hours. The pressure dropped again so I was told there was probably a leak in the system. We couldn't find any leaks on the radiators so I was then told to turn the heating off for 24 hours and see if the pressure dropped when just the water was on.

I turned the heating off last night (turned the dial to 'water only' and the two outer controls under the boiler to the right). This morning before the hot tap was turned on the pressure was at 1.7 and the temperature lights were all on up to 80 degrees. The only other light on was the power light, which was green.

I turned on a tap, the water was very very hot for about 30 secs and then went freezing cold again. The temperature lights had all gone out, but the power light was still on, the pressure was still at 1.7.

I then decided to see what would happen if I turned the heating back on. So I turned the controls under the boiler back to their middle positions and turned the front dial to 'heat and water'. The heating came on and the temperature lights started to light up. The power light stayed green and the flame light turned on, but was orange. The pressure started to increase and was up to 2.5 by the time the temperature was at 50 degrees, I didn't want it to go any higher so I turned the heating off via the timer.

At the moment the heating is off via the timer, the dial is still on 'heat and water', the controls under the boiler are all facing forward (middle positions), the pressure is 1.8 and the tap water isn't heating at all.

Help!!!
