Hi

The stairs in my house do not yet have a handrail. I want to fit one, but it appears my walls are plasterboard, so I have been trying to find the studs in order to fix a rail securely.

I have tried to use a stud finder but with no luck. So I decided to drill a few holes in the wall to have a look what was in there. The internal wall is really thin, there is about an inch (maybe a little more) between both sides of plaster. I have not yet found a wooden stud, but I keep seeing some thick cardboard attached between both sheets of plasterboard.

Are my plasterboard walls being held together by cardboard?! The horizontal pieces of card have holes in which I presume is for electric wiring if needed.

Does anyone know what kind of walls I have and what I should expect to see between the walls? Will it be possible to even hang a hand rail?

Thanks

Chris

Thanks for this Gaz. Looks like I'll struggle mounting a handrail then? Have these walls on both sides of the stairs (in middle of house)...
