Scenario is 4 double and 2 single flourescent light box fittings in a suspended ceiling. The lamps are PLL 4 PIN COL840 55W. (240V)

They are all fed from one gang of a standard 4 gand light switch. They intermittently stay off, come on or flicker together.

Would you suggest it is the internal switch contacts poor connection, or could it be one or more of the tubes or control units causing this ?

The only common point is the switch (and the wiring feed, dont know if there is a JB in the circuit)

Thoughts ?

Fluorescent lights can be a heavy burden on switch contacts. Especially as you effectively have 10 x 55W tubes.

What happens if you just connect the light switch conductors into a bit of term block.?

Make sure your switch is x-rated

I think it means that it is suitable to use in a commercial environment where you would have lots of fluorescent lights.
