Hi,
I am in process of renovating my attic room, we have an access hole to the eaves and I'm wanting to make a "hidden" door. By that I mean a door painted the same as the wall that sits flush with the wall with no facings / architrave, all you see when the door is closed is the reveal round the outside of the door. Door isn't massive, around 3ft high by 2ft wide so was going to make an MDF door and fix with concealed cabinet hinges.
The wall has been framed up and sheeted over with plasterboard with a hole left for the door. So basically I have a 2" x 4" frame with plasterboard up to the edge of it, if I was making a normal door the next step would be to nail on the jambs and architraves and hang the door, but that would be too easy.
For a hidden door I want the corner edges to be reasonably solid so it stands up to an occasional whack putting stuff in and out of the attic so I was thinking of using corner tape to cover the plasterboard on one side but then how would I stick it to the 2 x 4 on the other side, from experience plaster / filler doesn't stick to wood very well, would mixing it with some wood glue work? I can't think of how else do do it where you wouldn't have a join line between wood and plasterboard, from past experience that isn't a good idea as it will crack eventually. Was thinking maybe strips of plasterboard on top of the 2 x 4s, corner tape then nail the wooden jambs on through the plasterboard and into the 2 x 4s?
I have seen plenty of these style of doors / access panels so it can't be a new problem but the internet isn't helping me at the moment! There must be a "normal" way of doing this kind of thing. Any advice gladly received!
p.s. yes I know it would be far easier to just put on some mouldings but I like making things more complicated than they need to be so I'm not doing that
! The whole idea with this is if its a success the door to my ensuite will get the same treatment when we do it up.
