I bought some expensive knobs before undoing the old handles when I found a large hole (for the bolt bar) underneath. While the door knob rose covers the hole, the screws on the top do not catch any wood.
Any ideas for solving this problem?

what constuction is the door

if its panneled hardboard or ply with wood frame inbetween
the chances are its been put on to high for the lock block
or on the wrong side alltogether

or are you saying youve got a large hole about 10mm round
where there handles used to be is it a solid door does the hole
go right through and will you see the repair or will it be painted

It is panelled, probably thin ply, and now painted so repairs can be hidden.
However, around the hole c. 3cm, which does go right through, it is all hollow inside which rules filler out.

sorry i didnt get back quicker i loose pages

had this problem at my brothers house complete nightmare

are the holes beside the the lock or can you look right through
the hole with the lock in place

It is not a lock but just a latch and yes you can see right through it with the latch in place !

the solution is as follows

if there is a big enough hole when the lock is remove to gain access
crumple up some kitchen paper force it into the void 12mm or so
below the hole and just behind the hole glue in a block of wood
clear of where the lock goes or fill the pocket to cover screwhole
but clear of lock with sutable filler used the above method on two doors

or the easier route for the other two if the holes line up use these

drill a 5mm hole and tap in they are actualy standard short round
plugs with two tiny wings to grip the side to stop rotation
they look square in the picture :?: :?:

Hollow fixing are very good but you can easily overtighten them if you're not careful and the correct size screw is important as well.

I was wondering, never tried this, is use a expanding foam to fill inside the door then drill out for rawlplug.

dont think expanding foam would have the body for it

though it would be fun watching it ooze out of every crevice
and possibly pop the sides    :D
