holes in walls

my mate has a very small hole in her wall, but it goes from one side of the wall straight thru to the other,
she has just moved, some1 must of tryed filling, cos the polly filler is a bout half an inch of the wall on each side, what would be the best way to do, should i put a hammer through that bit of the wall and put some plaster board at other side and fill in?

im not too sure!!!

Fill it with expanding foam ,when it sets cut it back then plaster it level
