"hot bitumen" ?

I've just posted about using a vapour control layer on a flat roof ( thanks to chapper for explaining how it all fits together)

The spec says to use hot bitumen over the VCL. I remember hiring a tar boiler and melting bitumen but that was a long time ago . In these days of super adhesives do roofers still use buckets of hot tar?
