Hot water, but no heating

My central heating is not working but hot water is.

I haven't got a clue where to start, so was wondering if there are any simple checks I can do before contacting a plumber?

It started happening about a month ago, but came back on suddenly - it seems to be when it's the coldest days - it came back on briefly last night but went off again.

Any ideas?

Need more details. What type of heating? what type of boiler, fully pumped? 2 or 3port valves etc
