Hi all, ive got a few questions regarding the hotwater cylinder and wonder if anyone can help.

From what i see, there are two thermostates on a hot water cylinder. one connected to the immersion heater and another 1/3 of the way up the cylinder.

When the immersion heater switch is flicked on, the the element begins to heat the water up inside the cylinder.

1) Does the power get switched off by the immersion heater thermostat once it reaches its 55/65 celcus temperature indicated on the thermo?

2) Is the cylinder stat and immerstation stat connected?

An immersion heater usually has it's own thermostat, in a pocket alongside its element.
The thermostat on the water cylinder is used to control how much heat the boiler puts into the domestic hot water system.

Yes.

No.

Thanks, so basically we can leave our immersion heater on constantly, and the thermostat will switch it on and off accordingly to the temperature.

You could yes, but as the cylinder is usually heated by the CH, you don't really want to. Everytime the water in the cylinder cools below the setting on the immersion heater, it will switch on and use electricity, thus raising your energy costs. The immerser would therefore turn on every time you use the hot water, as it takes time for the boiler to raise the temp back up.

It's really there as an emergency backup for HW should your CH fail

It is cheaper £4£ to heat water using the CH system than it is to use an immersion heater.
