the pipe over the tank in the loft keeps running causing the tank to overflow. I have now turned off the water supply to the cylinder which has stopped it. Any ideas?

Probably...

Find all your mixer taps, including the shower.

One of them is probably surprisingly cold, and if you turn it on "hot" will take longer than usual to warm up. The "hot" pipe will be surprisingly cold.

It will be a mixer that is supplied with high-pressure cold water from the main, and low-pressure hot water from the tank.

It will most likely be a fancy tap with a single joystick to operate, and ceramic disks inside (not rubber tap-washers)

It might have been recently installed by an inexperienced person, and will never have been easy to adjust to a comfortable temperature.

Is the tank in the loft that's overflowing a cold water storage tank ,feeding the hot water cylinder ,or an F&E tank feeding the boiler / central heating ? If its the former ,closing the feed to the cylinder would not in itself stop the water level rising ,if the actual cause is that outlined by JohnD above.
Unless the faulty tap/ valve etc have been unused during your test.

can you post a pic of your HW cylinder please, you may have an Albion

I am at the moment cleaning the boiler system with Fernox ds40 and all seems to be good, but I have been here before. Is there anything I can use to clean the hot water side safely in case there is scale blockage.

Just to confirm that it's the vent pipe that's running, rather than the water level in the cistern just rises and then overflows? ... i.e. it's the copper pipe that curves up over the top and into the cistern?

Hi Rob
Sorry I haven't been looking for a day or so, yes its the copper pipe over the cistern. The boiler side heating the water and feeding the radiators appears to be working fine. Any ideas? Please
