Hello all,

We've recently fitted an ensuite in a room that was an existing bathroom, to now make a bedroom and make the most of the sea view.
But now we want to make use of a room on the 3rd floor by turning it into a bathroom, just with a bath and sink. Now the question is where to draw the hot water from. The ensuite is at the back of the house on the 2nd floor, where the storage tank and boiler are and this new bathroom is on the 3rd floor at the front. Now it has been suggested that we draw the water off at 3rd floor level from the hot water vent pipe. However the water tank is theoretically on the same floor albeit raised at ceiling height and in the eaves where the vent pipe runs to meaning it would only be 1.5m above the suggested draw off point. Am I correct in thinking that this would reduce the vent pipes intended purpose as the draw off is so close to the venting point.

Wherever you draw off from, the level of the water in the vent pipe would rise to the point of the highest outlet for hot water, which in your case would be the bath or basin taps! Water finds it's own level!

The static head would be governed by the height of the base of the tank above this outlet.
Without looking it up, I can't give you the exact science behind it but depending on the size and volume of the extended HW system, the amount of pipework required in the vent might not be enough to prevent spill over into the CWS tank which is not a problem as long as it's not excessive and constant!
