Hot water flow

Can anyone explain why my hot water tap flows for about 5 seconds then you hear a thud in the pipework and then the flow stops.turn tap off then back on again and flow returns for about 1 second then stops again. This only happens to the upstairs bathroom tap. The boiler is downstairs.

Sounds like you have a stop tap fitted the wrong way round.

Thanks guys for replies. What is and where would I find stop tap ? This problem is only recent , the stop tap has always been as it is
Can faulty tap be repaired or does it need to be replaced ?
