Hotpoint BF1620 dishwasher not working

Hi All
On a similar theme, inrecently pressed down the 'on off' on the BF1620 and as I released it the button came away in my hand!? So now there is a void where once the button resided. In the void I can see what appears to be a strip of plastic running vertically down into the machine. It is this that has blocked my attempts to simply refit the button.
Can any one offer any help please?
