Hotpoint Dishwasher fails to start!

Hi All

Much to our upset last night our dishwasher stopped working.
It seems to fill up alright but thats as far as it goes. I did take the right side off to see if anything obvious was causing the fault, but all seems well.
I did move a red rod up and that seemed to drain the water out.
So it fills and i can manually drain it but it doesn't do anything in between. Help!
