hotpoint Motor runs eratically

my hotpoint WD71 developed a strange fault

as soon as you start the cycle the water fills as normal
the drum starts to turn a bit as normal
but when the drum turns its very eratic and much much faster than you would want, not quite 600 spin speed but definitely faster than usual
the motor also makes a screeching noise

any ideas
