I have a Hotpoint WM75 and have a problem with the door close sensor. On 'starting' the display says 'close door' this was resolved by opening the door and re-closing. Now is totally stuck with the 'close door' problem.

I've cleaned the contacts and checked the connections. Can I bypass the sensor? out of the door lock box is one brown, one white, one black wire.

Any suggestions please, as I have a total kitchen floor covered in dirty washing!

Cheers, PD

Yes, you can try taking the brown and white wires off the door switch and joining them together. Make sure the machine is unplugged when you do this and wrap insulation tape round the joined wires. If the machine now works, fit a new switch, part No. 1602390.

Thanks Fido!

I thought that the brown one would have to stay there for power and the black and white ones are for 'open' and 'closed' states, but removing just either or both didn't work, hadn't thought of closing the loop by taping one them to the brown one!

and snap! had just rung all around here asking for a new interlock assembly PT 1602390, but unsuccesful so have ordered one from Hotpoint, which will hopefully be here for the weekend.

Am off to the 5th test at the Oval on Thursday and was seriously worried I'd have to trade in my ticket for a new washing machine!

Cheers, PD

The 3 wires are: Brown = Live
White = Switched Live
Black = Neutral

When a programme is selected and the door is shut, power goes to the brown & black wires which heat up a little heater inside the switch. This heater heats a bi-metal strip which operates the locking mechanism and also switches the door switch, energising the white wire. when the programme finishes power is removed from the brown & black wires, the heater cools down and the locking mechanism releases. As you will see, it is OK to join the brown and white wires together but don't ever join either of them to the black :eek:
