No telling if they've used elbows or machine bends without getting in to look. If there are elbows and they've been soldered on you'd be no better off anyway. Stanley or pad saw should cut the ceiling, but be certain there are no cables hidden up there before cutting.
Charnwood's idea is a good option. If you were to box the pipework in under the ceiling, the box could be tiled to blend in. Its a case of whichever is the lesser of the 2 evils for you. Ceiling may be difficult to make good without the patch being obvious.....
