How Can We Stop Our Water Pipes Making A Noise?

Occasionally there is a loud, “vibrating noise” in the water pipes here when we turn a cold tap on. Often when this happens the noise can be stopped, by closing the tap some of the way. Sometimes the tap has to be turned off completely.

In a couple of instances the only way to subsequently stop the noise has been to turn off the main stopcock. And in these instances it has been a few minutes before we have been able to open the main stopcock completely without the noise starting again. Though it has been possible to partially open the main stop cock without the noise starting.

We think that the noise comes from the same place in the pipe work each time. Although it is difficult to be sure about this.

Could anyone suggest what might be causing this problem? Or what we might do to prevent it happening in the future?

Normally this is down to water hammer and clipping and supporting the pipes through it's route can stop/reduce this noise.

Yes it is. :D

No it won`t.

It`s a faulty tap washer, simple as that, or it may be your mains stoptap is `jumping` an experienced plumber will be able to pinpoint either. ;)
