how do i bleed air from a hot water cylinder?

You don't make it very clear what you're asking.
You don't need to bleed air from the cylinder as such - since the outlet is at the top, the air comes out first.
To bleed air from the primary (coil), you should have fitted (or your installer should have fitted) a tee in the flow just before the cylinder union. The Tee should have some kind of air vent on it, either manual or automagic.
If you don't have these things, then you do have a problem.

when you say a tee do you mean a joint in the shape of a 'T'... i do have one of these but it is on a vertical pipe up the side of the cylinder that continues up into the loft. this joint looks like it is a capped off 'T' junction.
this same vertical pipe come from the boiler and below the 'T' there is a branching off pipe which is the pipe that goes into the cylinder to the top of the coil...
if we are talking about the same 'T' do i just slightly unscrew the capped off end to let the air out?
