How do I clean limestone wall

I have just knocked off the plaster from an alcove to expose the limestone wall behind. The stone however is very 'dusty' and I can't seem to clean it. Any tips? I've tried scrubbing with a brush....looks great when still wet but drys off the same! Also, is there anything I can seal it with when (hopefully) clean? (it has lime mortar). Thanks

Possibly stabilising solution ...not PVA....like decorators use .......maybe try that forum too

I would use good old lime wash, gives a good finish and is more authentic than exposed stone work. Dont use PVA as it will look bad in a few weeks.
