hi i have just moved into a new house with plasterboard walls. does anyone know how far apart the wooden struts are behind the plasterboard and how you can detect there location? as i have a few heavy pics, mirrors to put up. thankyou

how do i detect location of wood behind plasterboard?

several ways:
buy a stud detector, which either finds the studs by metal detecting (ie finding the nails used to attach the boards to the timber framing beneath) or by using some method of spotting the variation of density of the material as you pass it across the wall (mine never works in that mode, though!)
Sometimes you can spot them by tapping the wall, listening for hollow and not-so-hollow noises.
In my oldidh property he few stud walls have the timber approx 15" apart but that may be different in yours.

Well I can certainly tell you how not to be able to detect them, buy a Bosch DMF10 cable and stud detector, I can't make head nor tail of the output from the thing, when searching for live cables, it reckons my wooden desk is live 
You could try using the appropriate plasterboard fixings. Or use a small diameter drill to locate studs. Drill a series of holes, (within the outline of the mirror position) in a straight horizontal line. Don't drill any deeper than P/B thickness, prob 12.5 mm, plus a mm or 2. Once you've located 2 studs, the rest should be easy. Don't buy a stud detector, they are useless. (imo)
