How do you do your diagrams?

Just completing a rewire on a property I own (LABC notified, I have 2382, studying for 2391 in Oct).

In advance of LABC inspect/ test and in addition to the spreadsheet I have for the individual circuits (assumptions, correction factors etc), I need to provide a completed wiring diagram, but am unsure as to how to proceed...

- for instance, is it ususal to abstract the diagram i.e show just the circuit, or would you normally try to show relative posistions on a floor plan?

What would and wouldn't you include? Would you show individual items on a SELV circuit for instance (we have a number of zones with lots of small LEDs fitted for example).

I'm not too worried about what you use (I'll probably use Visio, but would be interested to hear what others use), but how you approach it - any examples / poointers would be really helpful.

thanks :-)

I use MS Visio, draw a basic floor plan and colour up the circuits and sockets / fittings that are associated with the circuits.

So a ground floor plan would have a red ring, a blue kitchen ring, yellow lighting, green cooker circuit etc. I'll even add lines to indicate the connectivity and routing for each circuit.

Takes about 2 hours from a blank page to complete, but I've never received a negative response for doing it and getting laminated copies as part of site records makes total sense to me.

I also used MS Visio, but didn't use colour (maybe because I am partially colourblind, but probably because I didn't think of it).

I scanned in the floorplans that my architect had produced, and then I placed little circles with numbers in them and other symbols (from one of the "Wingdings" fonts) to mark the locations of all points. Each room was also marked with a letter (e.g. K=kitchen).

Then I made separate electrical schematics of the final rings and lighting circuits and marked each with the relevant code (e.g. K.2).

Both were then included in my MS Word document (record of electrical works) along with a key for these codes.

This might seem extensive, but considering all the work I am doing (not much is NOT getting changed!) it has been really helpful to me. The codes were great in the section which represented my initial PIR, as I was able to write things like "the tile grouting around U.1, U.3, K.5 and K.6 was loose or non-existent in places and should be repaired to ensure there is no risk of exposure to live wiring".

The completed document was very much appreciated by my LABC.

Yes I covered SELV circuits, but in reduced detail. For example my new lighting system has electronic switches wired using cat5e back to the control panels. I have documented the location of thye switches and provided a configuration schedule, but have not done a wiring diagram. Similarly with the outputs (both LV and ELV). Instead I just have a "typical" wiring diagram for each type of I/O circuit.

Of course if this wasn't my own house I wouldn't have done all this!
