I am having a false ceiling installed and wish to put 50w halogen downlighters in it, how many would be a safe number to install on the one circuit, was hoping to put 18 in, its a large area?

what else is on this cicuit? and is this a standard 6A lighting circuit?
P=IV, which rearranges to I=P/V will be usful to you, but no offence if you didn't know this, then I might suggest that you are slightly out of your depth
18 * 50 W = 900 watts. I'm unsure how many lumens that is for halogen, but quite a few. You sure you want it that bright ? Exactly how large is this large area ?
900 W / 230 V = 3.9 A which is the least of your worries.
