We have a SW facing 6th floor balcony and it's a massive sun trap and we want to come up with a DIY solution to add some shade somehow.

The shade/material will have to be removable as it would get windy, so it would be fabric attached by carabiners.
Here is an example of what I am kind of meaning.

Our shade would be less permanent, and fabric would not be as tight, but the posts would be there year-round and need to be secure.

We think we need a tall sturdy fence post

But we are trying to work out how to attach this post to the balcony rail.
Any attachment obviously can't touch the glass as they do shatter and there's only 6mm space behind the verticle metal before the glass.
The floor is wooden.
The horizontal balcony rail juts out a few mm's more that the verticle metal post.

Any suggestion on how to set this up, or things to consider?
Thanks in advance.

First question, are you sure that you are allowed to fit something to the rails?

Is the handrail round? Size?
How is the decking secured?

if its lease hold it may not be yours to attach to without permission, that may be quite to very restricted to stop a ghetto type appearance with everybody going freelance and annoying others
not meaning to be negative but you need to do your checks as the man on the triumph suggest [

The lease was a good thought, but, yes, it is all ok.

The handrail is round and 5cm across. Hopfully the attached pics in the 1st post gives a better idea of the area.
Decking is wooden decking attached to wooden joists.
Would love to hear of any suggestions.
Thanks in advance

I would not affix anything to the rails, they are holding up the barrier between you and a potential fall.

Putting a post to hold a sun shade will exert a lot of stress on the rail mountings, more than it was designed for
because the sun shade is like a sail and the wind pulls/blows them very hard.
Get a windy day and it could rip itself off it's mountings.

If your intent on a shade why not look at one of the retractable awnings available, they are not too pricy.
Then you wind it out on sunny days and wind it back in when you have finished.

I still dunno what's wrong with a parasol, they seem to have been used throughout history for thousands of years. Anyway you could google tiger clamps or cladding clamps perhaps eg https://www.claddingmate.com/produc...qkaJx9dG763AgoMPAM0xUN1p5203vOh4aAirMEALw_wcB but all very Health Robinson and as mentioned the balusters won't be designed for this though they will (or should) be very sturdy nevertheless. I would have thought any wall mounted would need permission of the building owner and likely require planning permission.
