How to clean nicotinse stained plastic...

I've got 2 items I need to keep and clean up, both of which are filrthy currently: a wired smoke detector and wired alarm buzzer.

What would be a good product for cleaning these bearing in mind I can use a damp cloth, but not a wet one on them?

Soda crystals or Sugar soap will remove the tar.

have a look and see if the plastic cover can be removed.

If it can, and is just a cover with no working parts inside, it can go in the dishwasher. Put plastic items on the top shelf, well away from the heating element. If you have not got a dishwasher, remove any grease with washing up liquid, and put in a glass dish with Steradent or other denture cleaner. It is very good for stain removal (also of teapots and white sinks)

Nicotine stains tend to be permanent, not just surface dirt.
