I am looking to re-stain the internal doors and was wondering what the best method of doing this is. Is it to use a cloth or sponge or brush and are there any handy tips in doing this?

Looking at the doors its hard to tell how they were finished first time round. I cant see any brush marks so I'm guessing it wasn't with a brush. Also the doors to touch you can feel the wood so doesn't look like they were protected as such. I don't want to varnish them after staining as i think this will ruin the look as currently they are a mat finish and look good. Is it best to use a stain which also protects? The likes of Sadolin and Sikkins do this but both are for external doors. Can they be used internally?
