hi,

i've been given the job of terminating a couple of sy cables into there glands, however i have never done sy glands before, so don't want to do it wrong as i believe they can rust etc when done wrong. Any pointers?

Also, what wiring code on a test cert is SY?

The normal glands of SY cable are rotten. They have two washers and slits where the backing nuts go and are a real pain in the neck. Hawk make a universal gland where you reverse the ring when using SY and I have seen many people double over the brade and use in SWA glands. Also seen standard stuffing glands used and earth sleeve put over brade.
The Hawk glands are the best but are also expensive so much will depend on where it is being used.
But I hate the proper glands for the cable they are real pain.

Push the (optional) shroud and compression nut part of the gland up the cable. Strip the cable so you have enough braiding to wrap around the threaded part of the gland body. Push the cable down through gland body. Make sure there is one of the brass washers on the threaded part.
Pull the braiding up through one of the slots on the threaded part and wrap around the thread. Put the other brass washer on so that the braiding is sandwiched between the two washers. Then fit the locknut and tighten. Trim any loose whiskers of braiding.
