Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can give me advise on how to fill cavity walls externally. I've heard of drilling a whole in the external bricks of a home and filling it with polystyrene balls...

can I do it myself rather than getting a builder in?

....if so where can I hire the equipment from?

Please help!

You need pretty specialist equipment so it is not very common as a diy project. A builder will not do this either but rather it is done by a cavity wall insulation company.

To be honest from how little you appear to know about it You should also get someone to check whether it is possible on your house as most cavity wall houses are suitable but not all.

Assuming your house is 1930 or later and not in an exposed location you might consider government subsidised mineral wool installation.

Hi

My advice would be to leave the cavity alone - it was put there for a reason - to act as a barrier to penetrating rainwater and provide ventilation to dry out the cavity be it through penetrating rainwater or condensation from within the building during winter months.

In fact cavity-fill insulation can become so saturated that it defeats the purpose of the exercise and makes matters a lot worse - do a search on this forum to find out more!

Regards
