Further to this post, I've had doubt cast as to whether the substance I'm looking at sticking some tiles to the floor is actually bitumen or not. Seems I've and a plumber I've had in the house this week, may have jumped the conclusion that it's bitumen based on the fact that it's black.

How can I identify whether this black adhesive I have is bitumen? I've tried taking a chunk of it outside and setting it alight (been told bitumen is highly flamable), but nothing came of that excerise.

Any suggestions ?

if that were true, how do they heat it to apply it?

a bitumen by product or one of its components maybe, but the stuff itself?

I would guess by not even seeing it...

that it IS bitumen...

get it up or screed over it :)

You can tile over bitumen/asphalt with no worries. If you're worried, use flexible adhesive. Personally I've always used regular adhesice (Feb fastset) with no problems. As always - make sure the floor is spotless (no dust or grease).
