How to install an external beam to be same height as internal

Hi,

I've got an external I beam (I know it is the wrong beam but was specced like that by structural engineer) that is supposed to sit in line with internal. The problem is the bearings would have to be cut to accommodate 30mm drop to have it inline with internal. How would you go about that?

Attached is the current opening that suffers from bowed brickwork.

As I understand I should be cutting 1/3 of the bricks each side to drop the I beam to same height as internal lintel.

How I should then make it look good once the beam is in place at each ends?

Is it about cutting brick slips and fixing them in place but then how would I make it look neat?

Any advise appreciated.

I am sorry, I don’t quite understand what is going on….I’m not too sure what you are trying to achieve

If you want to support that opening with 2 steels, they need specifying by a structural engineer including how they are connected together.

If the external brickwork has a soldier course then the external beam should be designed for that - normally it’s a universal beam with a flat plate of steel welded to its underside and sticks out to support the brickwork

The structural engineer should also specify the padstones required

Currently the head of the opening is at a split course - you really need to adjust that.

Hi @Notch7 ,

I have an external steel (there is already internal concrete lintel) I need to reposition (it was incorrectly installed) so that it sits inline with internal one (the photos above are before the incorrectly position steel was installed). The problem I am facing is the steel was incorrectly specced as if I was building an extension behind it (which I never asked for or mentioned) but in reality I wanted to close the house with external doors and install soldier course above the doors. Also according to structural engineer no padstones were required as this is supporting only the brickwork.

In order to position the steel inline with concrete lintel I need to put it on half bricks and then finish it off so that it is not visible from outside?
I was also wondering whether it is safe to position steel on half bricks?

I can only think about brick slips to cover it but not really sure.
