The caps were just JG trying to sell more plastic

I'm not sure I agree with that. Let me throw a genuine use case at you.

Elbow under floorboards through a drilled hole to enable a copper pipe to be a radiator tail

If the fitting is uncapped then lifting the radiator can compress the collar and release the fitting, the cap would largely prevent this#

That's what the collet is for...
Not the cap!

And, in my many years on the tools... I have never seen them with caps on... Very few with the collets! Lol.

It's why they then went to the twist lock because people were using hep2o fittings instead as they couldn't release accidentally!
