How to plater to avoid cracks

I'd like ro widen the landing by 2". Does it involve removing the vertical plasterboard, sistering a joist onto the existing joist, attacing a new vertical plasterboard and plastering? If so, how to I prevent cracks forming between the existing ceiling and the added bit? If I use a fibreglass mesh tape on the joint, will that be adequate?
