How to protect against this door attack?

Looks like they used a chisel to get access to the latch/bolt. I guess this would only work against locks that don't deadlock?

Yeah, it will only work with Yale type night latches. They can then push a thin filling knife/etc in to open the door- assuming that the homeowner hasn't deadlocked it with the key on exit.
 
You can get a BS nightlatch protected against that sort of attack. The one you have is either very cheap or very old.

A deadlock is better, but relies on the occupants bothering to use keys (most don't). I see there already is one.

The intruders seem not to be concerned about being seen or heard.

And a London or Birmingham bar for the inside as well, used to fit loads of these back in my early days 24/7 call outs, burglaries mainly
